Brian Cashman knows a thing or two about employing a best closer in baseball, so he isn't a stranger to what the Mets just did in locking up Edwin Diaz on a long-term deal.
Cashman had the luxury of holding Mariano Rivera in the back of his bullpen for the first 16 years of his tenure as Yankees GM, and signed Aroldis Chapman to a lucrative five-year deal after the 2016 season. Now, across town, the Mets have signed Edwin Diaz to a record five-year contract.
"I made the assumption all year long they were gonna retain their guy," Cashman said. "But you never know."
In Cashman's mind, why not sign Diaz to a long-term deal? The righty emerged as arguably the best reliever in baseball, and has the kind of entrance song that caught on like Rivera's "Enter Sandman" introduction.
"He had a hell of a year," Cashman said. "It was an amazing season he put together. And that trumpet is pretty awesome too."
