Nearly two weeks ago, BT declared that the Yankees and Mets seasons would end without playoff appearances.
At the time, it was hard to argue otherwise, as both teams weren't hitting, with the Yanks dealing with significant injuries in their lineup while the Mets had their own injury bug within the pitching staff.
But after a weekend in which neither team lost a game, and the two on a combined nine-game winning streak, Tiki Barber wondered if BT had changed his tune.
So far, he hasn't.
"As much as I'd love to sit here and say I was wrong…it's about the instincts I have when I watch these teams play," BT said. "The easy thing to do is to get on the air when they look awesome and everybody's feeling good, sure, you want me to take the L for last week? Good…that's fine, I'll take the L and gladly be saddled with the loss if this is what happens the rest of the way."
BT still has concerns with the Yankees' offensive potential if Aaron Judge isn't scorching hot at the plate, and wonders about the durability of the Mets pitching staff, and the efficacy of the bullpen. With those concerns in mind, he isn't ready to declare that his previous declaration was premature.
"When I took the position I did…about the general state, the overall malaise and deficiencies with both of these baseball teams, it was not a hot take, it was what I saw in the moment," BT said. "While it's dissipated a bit, clearly, I can't run from that take. I hope I'm wrong, but I still feel like a large part of what I said is true.
"There is no denying what the Yankees and Mets have done…it's inspiring, it's great to see, and it's fun. I hope that it sticks. That's all I can say."
