Clarke Schmidt was able to pick up the win on Wednesday, going 5.1 innings in a victory over the A’s for his second win of the season.
Many wondered if the righty would make it into the fifth to be eligible for the win, as Schmidt hasn’t been able to go deep into games with any kind of regularity for much of his career.
C-Mac could care less about pitcher wins, but the older generation of fans seems to value it, so he says it’s time to change how the stat is recorded.
“Something needs to fundamentally change,” C-Mac said. “I’m hearing people bitch and cry about it, and it’s bothering me…they have a real problem with the idea that wins are meaningless.
“No one cares. The managers don’t care about it, the pitchers don’t get paid from it…so if we’re gonna care about wins, it needs to change. We need to change this dopey rule that a pitcher can go 4.2 innings and get taken out right before getting that last out to give him five, and then a reliever comes in and gets two outs and get the win…if you want to make it that the scorekeeper can deem anyone eligible for the win, I’m open to it.”
Cy Young winners can have single digit wins, and when it comes to arbitration cases, nobody is bringing wins to the table to help their case. But if it matters to a large portion of the fanbase, then C-Mac says the nature of how wins are determined and recorded should undergo a makeover.
“I can’t hear anymore complaining about managers taking out starters shy of getting a win,” C-Mac said. “When no one gives a damn.”
