Brian Cashman told reporters on Tuesday that he doesn't think anyone can compete with Steve Cohen and his wealth when it comes to free agents, as the Yanks and Mets prepare to go to battle over the services of Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Was it a tongue-in-cheek comment by Cashman, or was he being sincere? If it was the latter, C-Mac doesn't see any problem with it.
"I think Brian Cashman - and this is just my opinion from the way he's spoken the last several times he's met with the media - is the old man who doesn't care," C-Mac said. "He's been around long enough. I don't think it's gamesmanship or some sort of bending the knee…I just think it's straight up, blatant, obvious truth.
"We all know…Steve Cohen has the most money in baseball. That's all he's saying. We read into stuff on such a level, it cracks me up. He pretty much said Steve Cohen has the most money in baseball. Does anyone not believe that?"
At the very least, C-Mac finds it refreshing that the two New York rivals are battling for the same big-name free agents again, and it will give a glimpse into whether Cohen is actually for real in the free agent market.
"Steve Cohen has yet to prove he will go above and beyond," C-Mac said. "Will he write a $360 million contract for Yamamoto if the Yankees offer him $350? We don't know that yet.
"They are in a heated battle for the same player, and we have no idea who is going to win. No idea."
