As the Angels fall out of the playoff picture with Mike Trout on the IL, could the Halos do the unthinkable and trade the game's biggest star in Shohei Ohtani?
If that happens, C-Mac says the Yankees and Mets should both be in on the two-way star, but while every prospect should be available from the Yanks, he would stop at one name for the Mets.
"I think [Francisco] Alvarez is special…and the position he plays and what he does is special," C-Mac said. "The advantage you get to having a young, stud, power-hitting catcher is different than the advantage of having a very solid, good, young shortstop. I would not include Alvarez in a trade. I would be more open to include Volpe in a trade if it's the Yankees.
I'd be more open to it. I'd be willing to trade, at least in my mind for a second here."
Volpe has turned things around after a slow start to his rookie season, and the Yankees have sky-high expectations for him, pointing to his potential as reasons for not going after star free agent shortstops in recent offseasons. But C-Mac says that recent wealth of free agents at the position is what makes Volpe more expendable than Alvarez would be for the Mets.
"How many shortstops just came through in the last few years?" C-Mac said. "How many just came through in free agency? It is a lot easier to find a shortstop who plays defense as well as Anthony Volpe, and can be even what we think Anthony might become: a .300 hitter with some pop. It's a lot easier, not easy, but easier to find a player like that as opposed to a catcher who hits 35 home runs."
