Carton & Roberts' new weekly guest Josh Richards is now the proud owner of a professional football team, and Craiggy wants in on the action.
Richards, the 19-year-old social media star, is a co-creative director in the new Fan Controlled Football League, adding more influential muscle to a league that will be built on interaction, where fans will be able to vote for what play is called during a 7-on-7 game played on a 50-yard field.
The original league began in 2018, and believe it or not, Carton was seen as a potential quarterback for one of the teams, and was asked to come for a tryout in Las Vegas. Carton missed out on that opportunity, but he’s looking for a second chance if Richards will offer it.
“When I saw the press release that my main man Josh Richards owns one of the teams I thought ‘hey self, go talk to your main man, your buddy, and get a tryout,’” Carton said.
Evan was skeptical about the team’s performance with Carton under center.
“I assume Josh, you like to win?” Evan asked. “Why would you put a guy who is 10 to 15 pounds overweight, probably hasn’t thrown a football in a considerable amount of time, would you really want to put him in that position?”
Josh sided with Evan, instead pondering if Johnny Manziel could be his quarterback (he can’t as Manziel has already committed to play with the Zappers).
“It probably would bring my team’s winning down a bit,” Josh admitted when pondering Carton as the starting quarterback. “We’d probably be one of the 10-15 playoff teams.”
Carton may not get a spot, but he or any other fan who downloads the app and supports a team can vote from a selection of three plays on each down. The majority vote will be the play selected in a new, interactive form of football, one that hopes to be more successful than other NFL competitors like the Arena Football League and the XFL.
“This is for the intense dad or kid that catches himself yelling at the TV or calling the coaches dumb and saying they should have picked a different play,” Richards said. “You actually get to go in there and start calling plays for your team as a fan.”
Richards may not be helping Carton get a spot in the league, but he could help him and Evan with another endeavor. Carton and Roberts have been asked to create their own Esports team within the NBA 2K League. Carton or Evan will have to take up one of the spots, but the other two can go to whomever they choose. Maybe Josh has some friends in the gaming industry that can be the team’s Kevin Durant?
“You’d be surprised at how many of my friends are low-key, undercover pros,” Josh said. “It’s crazy. There’s a few that are 12-hour-a-day hooked onto gaming.”
Carton and Evan will both have to start logging those kind of hours if they want to contribute to their own team.
