The Islanders stood pat at the NHL trade deadline, the Rangers acquired three forwards and a defenseman, and the Devils added just a goaltender, acquiring Andrew Hammond from Montreal for forward Nate Schnarr.
Hammond, 34, played four games for the Canadiens this year, going 3-0-0 with a 2.40 GAA and .920 save percentage. Hammond also played 11 games for the AHL's Iowa Wild this year, going 6-2-3 with a 2.44 GAA and .908 save percentage.
The veteran netminder has 60 games of NHL experience with Ottawa, Colorado, and Montreal, posting a 30-15-6 record with a 2.32 GAA, .923 save percentage, and one assist – but he has not played at the top level since making one appearance with the Avalanche in 2017-18.
Hammond gives the Devils a veteran netminder to join Nico Daws and Jon Gillies, who have taken over as the team's goalie combo with Jonathan Bernier out for the season and Mackenzie Blackwood still shut down due to a heel injury that has plagued him all season.
Schnarr, 23, was acquired from Arizona in the Taylor Hall deal in December 2019, and has spent his entire Devils career in the AHL. This season, he has recorded 13 goals and 13 assists in 43 games with Utica, with 26 penalty minutes and a plus-12 plus/minus.
