Just before free agency opened on Thursday, the Devils completed a trade that sent away a former top draft pick.

Pavel Zacha, New Jersey’s sixth overall pick in the 2015 draft, has been traded to the Bruins for forward Erik Haula, according to multiple reports. The move clears up a crowded center position for the Devils, and brings in a former seventh-round pick who played in a career-high 78 games for Boston last season, scoring 18 goals and logging 44 points.

Haula has bounced around the league since 2013, playing for the Wild, Golden Knights, Hurricanes, Panthers, Predators, Bruins, and now, the Devils. He has one year left on his contract.

Zacha, a restricted free agent, never quite met expectations in New Jersey, but has set a career high in points in each of the last three seasons, finishing with 36 points in 70 games last season, netting 15 goals and dishing out 21 assists.
