Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu and Mets first baseman/outfielder Dom Smith have both been nominated for their league’s 2020 Hank Aaron Award, which is given annually to the “most outstanding offensive performer” in each league.
LeMahieu, 32, hit .364 with 10 home runs and a 1.111 OPS in 50 games this season, the second and final of his short yet ultimately huge deal with the Yankees. He played Gold Glove-caliber defense at second base, as well, and is expected to be one of the top finishers in the MVP balloting.
Smith, 25, excelled while playing left field, first base, and DH for the Mets this year, slashing .316/.377/.616 with 10 home runs and 42 RBI in 50 games.
Fans can vote for the winners of the Hank Aaron Award by visiting MLB.com/hankaaronaward, and a panel of Hall of Famers including Johnny Bench, Ken Griffey Jr., and Aaron himself will also help select the winners.
LeMahieu’s AL competition is White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu, Twins DH Nelson Cruz, Blue Jays outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, Rays utility man Brandon Lowe, Indians infielder Jose Ramirez, and Angels outfielder Mike Trout.
The six other NL nominees are Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper, Padres third baseman Manny Machado, Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager, and Nationals outfielder Juan Soto.
