The Yankees are already down a starter, perhaps for the season, with Frankie Montas set to undergo shoulder surgery next week.
Meanwhile, Nestor Cortes is nursing a hamstring strain, and Luis Severino carries years of injuries into his 2023 campaign, one the Yanks hope will be his first without injury since 2018.
With all of those questions surrounding the rotation behind Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, Evan posed a potentially controversial question during Wednesday's show, one that also can pertain to the Mets.
"It's a question that creates emotions, but it's a question that Mets fans may face at some point this year, and maybe the Yankees a little bit more, not so much right now," Evan said.
"Should they sign Trevor Bauer? Cy Young winner just sitting right out there."
Bauer was cut by the Dodgers after serving his record suspension following assault allegations, beginning with a San Diego woman filing for a restraining order and continuing with two women making similar assault allegations to The Washington Post. But the restraining order request was dismissed by a judge, and criminal charges being filed were declined.
Now, Bauer, who also been widely criticized for bullying on social media, is a former Cy Young winner who most teams will likely want nothing to do with, though Evan wonders whether that could change if a team, particularly the Yankees or Mets, run into pitching injuries that could derail a championship season.
"But if it starts to pile up? Today it's easy…but when you start to need him, this is a question every GM in the sport is going to have to wrestle with," Evan said.
For Craig, the answer is an easy one. The Yankees could have injuries pile up, and the Mets' aging starters could wear down, but Bauer should never be an option for either team.
"Even though both franchises have quite famously signed guys who did despicable things to women in their lives, both franchises gotta own that…the Trevor Bauer stuff, recognizing that he has been acquitted by a court of authority in this country, which is important," Craig said. "Trevor Bauer to me can never put on a Met or Yankee jersey because he is a bad guy, in my opinion.
"I will never say yes. I can't."
