Forbes released its annual baseball franchise valuations on Thursday, and turns out, owning an MLB team is still a worthy investment.
Per Forbes, the average MLB team value is up to $2.32 billion, an increase of 12 percent, while total revenue in 2022 hit an all-time high of $10.3 billion, an increase of nearly eight percent.
As usual, the Yankees were at the top, again the most valuable franchise in the league, now valued at $7.1 billion, an increase of 18 percent.
Having the YES Network helps, as Forbes reports that the Yanks collected $143 million in cable money last season, thanks to YES being “the most profitable and most watched” regional sports network in the nation. Since Forbes began its yearly MLB valuations in 1998, the Yankees have never been anywhere but No. 1.
The Mets came in at sixth in the league, valued at $2.9 billion, just behind the Giants, Cubs, Red Sox, and Dodgers. But the team is also operating at a hefty loss for 2022, a league-high $138 million. That comes after Citi Field reportedly enjoyed record revenue in 2022, with Forbes reporting the figure at $244.3 million.
The Mets own the highest payroll in baseball, north of $300 million and nearly $60 million more than the Yankees.
