Justin Verlander and Sandy Alcantara were both unanimous Cy Young Award winners on Wednesday night, but with five names on the ballots, some Yankees and Mets were sure to get some down ballot love – and they did indeed.
Nestor Cortes and Gerrit Cole each earned some fifth-place votes – three for Cortes, one for Cole – and Edwin Diaz got one second and two fifth-place votes, with the Yankees finishing eighth and tied for ninth, respectively, and Diaz placing ninth out of 12 hurlers receiving votes in the NL.
Cortes' fifth-place votes came from the two New York voters – NJ.com's Randy Miller and MLB.com's Bryan Hoch – and the Detroit News' Chris McCosky. Cole's came from Rosie Dimanno of the Toronto Star, tying him with (ironically) the Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman, whose lone vote came from the other Toronto voter, for last among the 10 pitchers receiving votes.
Diaz, meanwhile, got a second-place vote from MLB.com's John R. Denton, voting from the St. Louis chapter, while his fifth-place votes came from Mike Puma of the New York Post and SI.com and FOX Sports' Tom Verducci, voting for the Milwaukee chapter.
The Yankees have not won a Cy Young Award since Roger Clemens won it in 2001, while the Mets are just three seasons removed from Jacob deGrom's back-to-back Cy Youngs in 2018 and 2019.
