Joe Schoen wasn’t a household name outside of hardcore NFL homes before he became the Giants’ general manager, and he still may not be the most recognizable face in the world.
Except, again, for the hardcores, one of which found him while he was trying to do some home improvement recently.
“I got asked a question earlier, what the weirdest thing was that has happened since I’ve been with the Giants,” Schoen said Tuesday. “I was at Lowe’s with my wife not too long ago, and I felt like this guy kept looking at me, and I was like, ‘what the hell is going on? Why is this guy creeping around?’”
Yes, Joe Schoen shops at Lowe’s just like you and I, so that’s one takeaway – and the other is that apparently, the Giants’ 6-2 start is enough to make him a celebrity of sorts.
“I was in the next aisle and there he was, and then the next aisle, and he finally walked up to me and said, “Are you Joe Schoen? Can I get a picture with you?’” Schoen said. “I thought it was kind of creepy, but then I realized what it was. I’m still not used to being out and getting recognized.”
Schoen obliged, and apparently, it’s better the Giants are 6-2 than 2-6, because a picture beats the alternative.
“It’s a lot better than booing, or a dog cussing you or throwing things at you,” he laughed. “It’s been great so far, but that’s hard for me to get used to, for sure.”
