Boomer & Gio: Giants could use their version of Baker Mayfield

The Buccaneers nearly became the first team to beat the defending champion Chiefs this season, ultimately falling 30-24 in overtime on Monday Night Football.

It was a strong game for Baker Mayfield, who finished with an even 200 passing yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions in the losing effort, leaving Boomer and Gio to wonder what the Giants might look like if Mayfield was under center for them this season instead of Daniel Jones.

“If Baker Mayfield were on the Giants, how much better would they be this year?” Gio wondered.

“I think they would be a lot better,” Boomer said. “Because he's so fiery, and he's exactly what Brian Daboll is looking for.”

Mayfield has found his way in Tampa, winning a playoff game last season after a Pro Bowl season, and this year, he has a higher completion percentage and currently leads the league with 23 touchdown passes. He just signed a three-year contract, so it’s nothing but a hypothetical, but Gio says Mayfield is just the type of quarterback that the Giants could benefit from as they continue to wait for their franchise QB.

“I feel like that pairing together would do some special things,” Gio said. “I look at Baker Mayfield because we talk so much about what's next for the Giants and finding that guy, and who is it? And if you don't draft them, where are you going to find him?

“Baker Mayfield's that perfect example, a guy who was bouncing around, but he works his ass off. He has a lot of energy and he found his home in Tampa where he is playing his ass off. If the Giants can't find somebody in the draft this year, they got to find the closest version of that somewhere in free agency or a trade, which makes it so difficult.”
