Boomer & Gio: Is Joe Schoen getting enough criticism for state of Giants?
A caller wondered if Joe Schoen was getting the level of criticism he deserves for the state of the Giants at the start of his third season as general manager, but Gio believes that the GM has been getting his share of attention.
“I feel like Joe Schoen has gotten a lot of criticism lately,” Gio said. “ A lot of people were crushing him for how he handled some things on Hard Knocks, like the Saquon Barkley thing.
“Daniel Jones has been the guy we’ve been pounding on more than anybody else, but Joe Schoen is really starting to get that spotlight on him this year.”
Malik Nabers is expected to be a star, and Schoen badly needs him to be, given how recent draft picks have panned out. Meanwhile, the product on the field has only gotten worse since the Giants surprisingly reached the divisional round in Schoen’s first year at the helm. So, while attention may first go to Jones and Brian Daboll, Gio believes Schoen is getting his share of criticism in year three, even if it hasn’t been as bad as his predecessor, Dave Gettleman.
“I think they’re both bad. So far, it’s not been good,” Gio said. “But the biggest difference between Dave Gettleman and Joe Schoen is that Gettleman had an opportunity to draft a quarterback, and he whiffed. Joe Schoen hasn’t been able to do that yet...but the Kayvon Thibodeaux and Evan Neal draft picks are just not good.”
