Tyrod Taylor is on IR and Daniel Jones is feared to have a torn ACL, so it looks like Tommy DeVito or a newcomer at QB for a while for the Giants…and given they’re already 2-7, it looks to be a long season on the blue side of MetLife.
And so, Gio asked Boomer on Monday: will John Mara have patience with Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen, or are we in for another regime change?
“It all depends how this season ends; there’s a long way to go, but it feels like such a slog for both of these teams,” Boomer said. “But, I think you gotta see how the season ends, sit down with your coaches and front office and have hard conversations with all those guys.”
The difference with this regime is they did have success last year, and of course there’s been a regression, Boomer thinks nothing has changed with the message at least.
“Somebody could end up getting fired off of the staff, but I’ll say this about Brian Daboll: he’s the same guy speaking after games this year as he was last year,” Boomer said. “He’s telling you the same things, and not talking himself into some sort of firing like Joe Judge. I felt like Joe Judge was trying to defend every decision he was making and how he was trying to change the culture of the locker room and all this other crap, which you don't really hear that from Brian.”
Gio agrees, and would stick with what they’ve got.
“I know that this looks bad and the season is gone off the rails, but unless you can somehow extract Bill Belichick with a trade out of New England, like we hear that the Commanders are going to try to do, then I just don't wanna bring in another coordinator or another first time head coach or something like that,” Gio said. “There’s really no reason to do that. I like Daboll, and Joe Schoen, some of the decisions are going to be questioned, so maybe that’s the guy that more heat is on, but if I’m John Mara, I exercise some patience for once and say, let's have some continuity and give these guys a chance.”
GIo thinks that if the Giants fall towards the top of the draft, they’ll draft the QB they want and that will be their legacy, and Boomer doesn’t even think Bill Belichick might be available – but he does know one thing about an upcoming game:
“We're just trying to sit here and figure it out, but look: I know that the New England-Giants game, whoever loses that game is getting the higher draft pick for sure,” Boomer said, “so that’s something to look forward to a little bit down the road.”
