Boomer: Drew Allar should stay at Penn State regardless of Giants, NFL interest
Many wondered if Drew Allar could become a legit option for the Giants near the top of the NFL Draft if the Penn State quarterback shined against Notre Dame in Thursday’s Orange Bowl, but instead, the 20-year-old threw for just 135 yards and tossed a backbreaking interception in the final minute of play to set up a game-winning field goal for the Irish.
Allar, who recently walked back his earlier declaration that he would return to Penn State next year, also underthrew what would have been an easy touchdown earlier in the game, and hurled a last-effort lateral pass out of bounds to seal the win for Notre Dame, in a performance that did not match up with a top NFL draft pick.
Boomer says Allar would be better off staying in college next year, which means the Giants should have one less quarterback option.
“Maybe this is the game and the situation that tells him to go back to Penn State,” Boomer said. “No matter what the Giants say to you, just go back to Penn State and play another year.
“I can’t see him coming out now. That was an absolute disaster. My heart broke for that kid.”
Allar was emotional after the game as he explained the thought process during that killer interception, as he wanted to fire the ball at his receiver’s feet, but the pass was snagged by a diving Christian Gray to set the Irish up in Penn State territory just after punting it away.
It should not be the last throw Allar makes as a college quarterback, according to Boomer.
“Go back to school and maybe win a national championship next year,” Boomer said. “And you’ll have a leg up on everybody else.”
