With less than a week to go until Monday’s deadline to strike a deal, the Giants and Saquon Barkley are, by all indications, not any closer to a new contract than they were in recent weeks.
Still, Boomer expects a deal to get done, and he has even heard a pay range that could be agreed upon.
“I believe they’ll come up with a deal before Monday,” Boomer said. “I just feel like he’s gonna end up exhausting everything, and is gonna have to take the money. Take the deal the Giants have on the table. I’ve heard it may possibly be up to $14 million.”
Barkley current has the $10.5 million franchise tag on the table, one that he is mulling whether or not he will sign or continue to sit out. Gio doesn’t believe the Giants running back would go the latter route, so the organization holds all the cards.
“If they don’t agree on a new contract, he has to play under the franchise tag, and if he doesn’t want to sign it, he can sit out the season as well,” Gio said. “But there’s no way in hell he’s going to do that. There’s one guy in the past that did that, and that was Le’Veon Bell, and his career basically fell apart after that.
“He should be making more than that, but he’s not gonna let that go. He’s gonna go out there and try to get a new contract the year after that.”
