Tommy DeVito is now 2-1 as a starting quarterback, as the New Jersey native completed 17 of 25 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s win over the Patriots.
DeVito’s local ties and recent on-the-field success has made him the story of the city, and Boomer says DeVito has displayed some traits that a real NFL quarterback possesses.
“He has some energy, he has football instincts…It hasn’t been pretty, but he’s got touchdown passes, he’s run for a touchdown,” Boomer said. “You never know. I understand the realities of the league, and I understand who Tommy is. He’s learning and he’s growing…you gotta sit here and say that he looks the part. The ball comes out right, he sits in the pocket when he knows he has protection, waits for guys to get down the field, and actually completes passes over 30 yards down the field.”
Boomer has no idea if those traits will continue to show themselves, but right now, DeVito has been given the gift of no pressure, and so far, he is thriving.
“It’s just a weird thing. No pressure, just go out and play some football, kid,” Boomer said. “There’s no expectations, and he’s doing it.”
