The Giants have lost their hold on the No. 1 overall pick after Sunday’s loss to the Colts, meaning they no longer will have their pick of Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward unless an unprecedented amount of good fortune breaks their way in Week 18.
But Boomer Esiason believes Sunday’s victory, which dropped Big Blue to the fourth spot in the upcoming draft, is actually a blessing in disguise.
“I’m actually thankful that they don’t have the No. 1 overall pick, to be honest with you,” Boomer said. “I don’t want either of these quarterbacks in New York.”
Still, the Giants desperately need a new quarterback and a change to their offense, so how could that be accomplished after losing their hold on finally being able to draft and develop a new QB? Boomer believes there is a way to fill the team’s quarterback and potential head coaching vacancy, if Brian Daboll is let go, in one stroke.
“If I were a team that needed a coach and a quarterback - not named the New York Jets - wouldn’t it make sense for somebody to hire Brian Flores and bring Sam Darnold with him?” Boomer said.
“If [the Giants] had the guts to go for Brian Flores as their head coach, Sam Darnold as their quarterback, and sign Tee Higgins as a free agent...it’s a different Sam. It’s a different guy.”
