Boomer: Giants would need to dump Daniel Jones ASAP if they trade up to draft quarterback

According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, the Giants are looking to trade up in Thursday’s draft to land quarterback Drake Maye, though multiple other teams are reportedly looking to trade up for that same purpose.

Boomer says Big Blue would have the most enticing offer to a team like the Patriots, who could trade back from the No. 3 pick if they have their eyes on a quarterback that they believe will still be on the board later in the first round.

“The one thing that the Giants do have, is they have that sixth pick,” Boomer said. “That sixth pick is going to be worth something, especially if the Patriots have another quarterback they value not named Drake Maye.

“I think that sixth pick is a much bigger lure than what Minnesota or Denver has to offer.”

However, if the Giants indeed do trade up to get Maye, Boomer says it would have to be the end of Daniel Jones in New York, even if the escape hatch in his contract doesn’t activate until after the upcoming season.

“If you get Drake Maye, then what happens to Daniel Jones? You can’t keep Daniel Jones here with Drew Lock. You can’t,” Boomer said. “You’d have to trade him or cut him. If you traded him, you may have to do what the Jets did. you may have to add some incentive for a team to take him…but if you draft a kid, and trade up to get him in the first round and put him in that locker room, and Daniel Jones is still there, it’s not fair for the kid…and it’s certainly not fair for Daniel Jones. Because all Daniel Jones is going to be answering is about this kid they just traded up to draft. The moment you trade up to draft somebody is the moment you tell him, ‘You ain’t our guy and you ain’t good enough.’”
