As reports emerge that Matthew Stafford could very likely sign a $90-100 million deal with the Raiders or return to the Rams, it seems more and more set that the Giants will not land the future Hall of Fame quarterback.
If that is the case, Big Blue may pivot its sights towards another trade: landing the No. 1 pick in the draft to ensure the rookie quarterback that the organization covets, whether that be Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders. If that happens, Brian Daboll will finally have a young quarterback to develop like he did with Josh Allen in Buffalo, but Boomer Esiason says it would be too late by then for Daboll to see that process through.
“And then there will be a new coach next year,” Boomer said bluntly. “I feel bad for Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll. They’re trying to win…it seems very unlikely that they’re going to be able to trade for Matthew Stafford at this point. It seems that ship has sailed.
“They’re not winning with a rookie quarterback. Neither of these guys are Jayden Daniels or CJ Stroud, and the Giants roster as currently constructed is good enough to support the growth of a young quarterback that isn’t ready for the NFL yet.”
Owner John Mara seemed to make it clear at the end of last season that he expects a quick turnaround next season, so they would have to find a way to win more games with a rookie quarterback if that is the route they go.
And if that is the route they take, Gio says they will have to give up assets to make it happen, as the Giants likely won’t risk staying put at No. 3 when there are two top quarterbacks on the board.
“If the Giants love one of those two guys more than the other…then they do have to trade up with the Titans,” Gio said. “If they love Cam Ward more than Shedeur Sanders, then they will have to trade up.”
