Daniel Jones’ first preseason action was eventful, as it included two ugly interceptions in the first 13 minutes, including an easy pick-six against the Texans on Saturday.
Jones finished by completing 11 of 18 passes for 138 yards, and should have had a third interception had it not been dropped. Still, Boomer says he saw some things he liked out of Jones, and believes some fans are overreacting to the quarterback’s first taste of game action since tearing his ACL last season.
“People don’t understand, he is coming off of a serious knee injury. He’s ahead of schedule,” Boomer said. “It normally takes a running back, wide receiver, or offensive lineman nearly 18 months to come back and be really comfortable on the football field.
“In the second quarter, and especially late in the second quarter, you saw the back shoulder throws. You saw the aggressive, down-the-field throws. You saw him start to settle in. He also made a great throw to Jalin Hyatt, and unfortunately Jalin wasn’t able to keep the feet in bounds.”
Sure, the start was ugly, but there were some flashes of encouragement, and it’s something to build off of as the season nears.
“The start of the game was cringeworthy,” Boomer said. “But I was really encouraged by seeing the ball thrown downfield and down the sidelines.”
