It was none other than our pal Craig Carton who called in to BT & Sal just before 11:30 am on Friday to break the news: Daniel Jones has been released by the Giants.
And even with everything that’s happened, the guys think it was just the next logical step.
“It does make more sense now, with what we saw yesterday with Jones having that statement,” Sal said. “There were some who were thinking, well, why would he do this now with seven games to go? But now it makes more sense that he would ask for his release. You can’t go from being the starting quarterback to practice squad player; to me that was disrespectful to him.”
As Craig noted, even if Jones gets hurt doing something like playing safety in practice, that $23 million injury guarantee would still kick in, so if Jones isn’t in the plans, let him go and get rid of that albatross, at least.
Sal then read the statement from John Mara about the release, and here was BT’s reaction:
“That’s a class move by the Giants, and I'm happy for Jones,” he said. “We knew the era was over, but now it is officially over. Interesting stuff.”
