Brian Daboll has watched the Giants fall to a new low, dropping to 2-8 after losing to the lowly Panthers on Sunday in Germany.
With each loss comes more questions about Daboll’s future as Big Blue’s head coach, and Brandon Tierney says ownership should have already reached out to Bill Belichick to gauge his interest in taking over the job next season.
“Then that’s irresponsible,” BT said in response to Sal estimating that John Mara hasn’t contacted Belichick yet. “He should have done that already.”
Belichick’s final years in New England were disastrous, but his resume is undeniable, and one of the most accomplished in NFL history. Not to mention his familiarity and public admiration for the Giants, which BT says would likely play a big role in his interest in taking over the position and getting back on the sidelines.
“We know he reveres the Giants,” BT said. “You look at his history with the Giants, the way he wistfully talks about his time with the Giants, you have to ask yourself: does Belichick want to coach next year? The answer is yes. Would he accept the Giants head coaching job if he was offered? My answer is yes.
“What I’m less sure about is if the Giants would actually offer it. How could you not?”
There would be questions about Belichick’s ability to coach at this point in his life, especially leading what would need to be a continued rebuild, but BT believes Belichick would have the newfound energy to reinvest in turning around another franchise.
“The year out, I think it’s energized him,” BT said. “Yeah, he’s not 50 or in his 40s. He’s not a young man...but I think this year away from football has kind of reignited the spark...I get he’s not young, but I would totally be willing to. It’s Bill Belichick.”
