Dak Prescott left Sunday's Giants-Cowboys game at AT&T Stadium with what was later revealed as a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle, and he will undergo surgery Sunday night at a local hospital in the Dallas area.

Roughly halfway through the third quarter, on a first-and-10 play from the Giants’ 27-yard-line, Prescott took off on a scramble for nine yards, but was tackled awkwardly by Giants safety Logan Ryan at the end of the run. Prescott immediately called to the sidelines and pointed to his ankle, which CBS cameras caught bent sideways at an awkward ankle and sticking out over the top of his shoe on live shot and then showed being bent at an unnatural angle upon replay.

Several players, Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy, and even Giants offensive coordinator (and former Cowboys coach) Jason Garrett came over to check on Prescott, who was placed in an air cast and carted off the field, biting a towel with an obvious look of pain on his face. Several Cowboys players were also seen looking emotional on the sidelines, and CBS cameras showed a concerned Jones family embracing in the owners' box.

Even CBS broadcasters Jim Nantz and Tony Romo noted how the injury “didn’t look like a minor one” and noted how the look of pain on Prescott’s face as he was carted off showed it.

Prescott, 27, is in a contract year, so a long-term injury is a crushing blow both to the struggling Cowboys and his future. He has never missed a game in his NFL career, starting all 69 of Dallas’ games (plus three playoff games) since being drafted in the fourth round in 2016.

He entered Sunday with 1,690 yards and a 9-3 TD/INT ratio on the season, and was 14-of-21 for 166 yards passing and one interception on Sunday – plus seven rushing yards, as well as one reception for 11 yards and a touchdown on a version of the “Philly Special” earlier in the game.

Andy Dalton, a former collegiate star at TCU, replaced Prescott and was sacked on the first play from scrimmage, but the Cowboys ended the drive with an Ezekiel Elliott touchdown run less than 90 seconds later, and went on to win 37-34 on a last-second field goal by Greg Zuerlein.
