Here’s an interesting nugget as we approach free agency in the NFL offseason: Daniel Jones is changing his agent.
ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported on Sunday that Jones is switching his agent from CAA to Athletes First as the free agent quarterback looks to secure a long-term deal from the Giants after an impressive 2022 season.
Athletes First is the same agency that has negotiated the largest deals (at the time) in NFL history, including the contracts for Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott.
Under new GM Joe Schoen, the Giants did not pick up Jones’ fifth-year option prior to the 2022 season, which many saw as a sign that the organization would move on from quarterback.
However, his performance in 2022 helped earn Big Blue’s first postseason berth since 2016 and first playoff victory since 201. It has Jones in pretty good position to remain with the Giants as a franchise quarterback.
The Giants front office has publicly indicated that they are pleased with Jones and would like him to continue to be the quarterback.
Yet, the Giants could do that without making any long-term commitment. They have until March 7 to decide whether or not to place Jones on the franchise tag for the 2023 season — which would pay him $32.4 million.
Jones would likely prefer to secure his future beyond the 2023 season, a potential reason he may be switching his agents at this stage in negotiations.
If the Giants do place Jones on the franchise tag, they can negotiate with him until July 15 before playing one the one-year, $32.4 million deal.
