Darren Waller coming out of retirement as Giants deal tight end to Dolphins: Report

In a stunning move, Darren Waller is reportedly coming out of retirement, but he won’t be returning to the Giants.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pellisero, the former Pro Bowl tight end is being traded to the Dolphins in addition to a seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick. Waller did not play last season, retiring from the game after spending just one year with Big Blue.

Waller, 32, battled injuries and hasn’t made more than 11 starts in a season since 2020, when he earned his lone Pro Bowl selection with the Raiders. He was acquired by Joe Schoen in exchange for a third-round pick. Hoped to be a much-needed receiving weapon for Daniel Jones, Waller instead logged just 552 receiving yards with one touchdown. He cited health concerns and walked away from the sport.

Now, he is back to fill the void in Miami left behind by the blockbuster trade that sent tight end Jonnu Smith, along with Jalen Ramsey, to the Steelers on Monday.

Per ESPN, Waller will sign a one-year deal worth up to $5 million with the Dolphins.
