Evan: Joe Schoen's job may be 'safe as hell,' even if Brian Daboll gets fired
Evan Roberts believes the Giants need to show some fight quickly, starting with Thursday’s Thanksgiving bout with the hated Cowboys, or the head coach could be shown the door at the end of the season.
“If the Giants don’t show more fight and effort,” Evan said. “Brian Daboll may not survive and will lose his job.”
If Daboll goes, many assume that Joe Schoen will be out as Joe Schoen as well. After all, they did arrive together from Buffalo. But Evan says it takes more time to evaluate a GM, and Schoen’s tenure in terms of draft picks hasn’t been as disastrous as past Giants general managers, and therefore, Daboll being fired doesn’t necessarily mean Schoen would leave with him.
“I don’t think Joe Schoen is in trouble at all,” Evan said. “John Mara doesn’t want to fire Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll. He even said it a few weeks ago. If he ends up firing the head coach, it would be because he lost the locker room, or because they don’t give constant effort and somehow manage to have a 2-156 season. I don’t think John Mara is gonna say to himself, ‘That’s on Joe Schoen...this team isn’t giving effort because of the head coach.’
“When I see Joe Schoen at Shedeur Sanders’ practice the other day, I do believe the general manager is going to draft a quarterback next year. I think he’s safe as hell.”
Schoen has had his egregious misses in the draft, like Evan Neal, but Evan says this past draft is looking much better with the likes of Malik Nabers and Tyrone Tracy, and if Daboll is losing the locker room, that wouldn’t be on Schoen, and therefore shouldn’t cost the GM his job as well.
“I think we’ve all made an assumption - and I believe it’s an incorrect assumption,” Evan said. “That they are a package deal.”
