Joe Schoen has said that the Giants are going to add a quarterback this offseason, and Evan says it should be via trade.

No, not by trading up in the draft to get a top-tier rookie quarterback, but a trade for a former 11th overall pick to start a “real competition” for the starting job.

“The more I think about it, the more I think the answer is Justin Fields,” Evan said. “I think he is a really, really interesting fit for where the Giants are.

“Justin Fields is still incredibly young, and we don’t know fully what he is. Number two, over his last 20 games, his numbers have matched Lamar Jackson. Over the last 20 games - I’m not gonna say he’s better than Lamar Jackson - but he has almost matched him.”

Evan believes Fields, if he costs a second-round pick like reports indicate, would be well worth the risk to potentially find a long-term answer at the position, while giving a real option at the start of the season if Daniel Jones isn’t healthy and ready to go for Week 1.

“The likeliest scenario is that they’re gonna draft somebody…if Daniel Jones isn’t ready, you just drafted, let’s say,  J.J. McCarthy in the second round, guess who is starting Week 1? J.J. McCarthy.

“Ideally, rookie quarterbacks should sit…you would like to have the kid you draft sit and learn.”
