According to multiple reports, Wink Martindale has resigned as Giants defensive coordinator, just hours after Brian Daboll told reporters that he expected Martindale to be back next season.
In the wake of those comments, and Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reporting a rift between the two earlier this season, Evan says Martindale’s departure is not a good look for Daboll.
“This isn’t good for the Giants moving forward,” Evan said. “This isn’t something you just wipe your hands with and say ‘Oh well, it didn’t work out.’ This is a guy they hired two years ago, and he did a pretty good job for two years, and because of - not performance, but personality reasons - he’s gone? That’s not a good look for Brian Daboll.
“Brian Daboll has been the head coach of this team for two seasons. One of the compliments Joe Schoen gave Brian Daboll…was that the team didn’t quit on him, which I agree with, by the way…this breakup happening is the opposite. This breakup is bad.”
Martindale’s defense settled in as one of the bright spots of the Giants season after a rough start, and he shouldn’t have much trouble finding himself another job this offseason. Considering Martindale’s exit isn’t based on merit, Evan doesn’t see how this looks good on the second year head coach.
“It means that a relationship couldn’t be fixed by the head coach that would have been better for the team,” Evan said. “The team would have been better if Wink Martindale was back.”
