The Giants could end up with a top five pick after Sunday’s season finale against the Eagles, and Gio says the best course of action for the organization would be to find a quarterback in the draft that the Brian Daboll/Joe Schoen regime loves, and take him with their top pick before using next season to develop him behind Daniel Jones.
“The smartest thing to do would be, if there is a quarterback there that they love…and they take that guy, is to have Daniel Jones come back and play next year,” Gio said. “Sit that guy - and I know how hard that’s gonna be for Daniel Jones, but whatever, he played with a guillotine over his head and earned that big contract - that would be the best situation. Then you can get out of the Daniel Jones contract after next year without much penalty, and then that guy starts.”
The Giants have an escape hatch in Jones’ contract after next season, and Gio says that would be the perfect time to part ways and hand the keys over to the quarterback they take in the upcoming draft, whether it be Jayden Daniels or Michael Penix Jr.
“I know there’s gonna be a lot of questions,” Gio said. “But if you’re really thinking about what is best for the Giants at that position, that is the route.”
