Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen were seen on Hard Knocks interviewing potential quarterback draft picks, while discussing the willingness to trade up to take Daniel Jones’ eventual replacement.
The revelations cast heavy doubt on Jones’ future with the Giants, but as Daboll told Boomer and Gio at camp on Tuesday, he talked with his quarterback about all of it, and the two are ready to move on and continue to prepare for Jones’ sixth NFL season.
“Respect the question, but I’ll keep that private,” Daboll said. “I certainly spoke to him. I speak to Daniel every day. I’m with him every day in meetings. We have a good relationship. I understand there’s a human element to it. There was an open line of communication between myself and Daniel throughout that process.”
Daboll has shown his emotions on the sideline with Jones during games at points in his tenure as Giants head coach, and those emotions have been a topic of conversation since defensive coordinator Wink Martindale’s departure, which was preceded by reports of a rift between coordinator and head coach. Regardless of the perception surrounding Daboll’s demeanor on the sideline, the head coach doesn’t anticipate any radical changes to that in year three.
“I think you always self-assess. But I grew up a certain way,” Daboll said. “I was raised by two hard, old-school grandparents that demanded your best. If you didn’t give your best, particularly from my grandmother, you were gonna hear about it. You always self-assess, but I love this game, I’m passionate about it. we work all week for one time each week, and everything matters.
“Certainly you self-assess and try to be better the year before. But I’m an emotional guy, and sometimes it shows.”
