The clock was ticking, as of Tuesday morning, for the Giants to get a deal done with Daniel Jones before resorting to the franchise tag.
With the deadline set for 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, the two sides reportedly continued negotiations well into the night on Monday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
“Those talks continued deep into the night,” Rapoport said on Tuesday’s Good Morning Football. “It got a little tense. Tension boiled over at times. That could happen…but the two sides did continue talking until the wee hours of the night.”
General manager Joe Schoen told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine last week that he felt the clock ticking and wished the two sides were closer to a deal, but the two sides reportedly closed that gap in the days since, though there is still more ground to be made up with just hours left on the clock.
Jones had a career year in 2022 under Brian Daboll, and the team has not been shy in wanting Jones to remain the starting quarterback. But reports have indicated that Jones could be seeking as much as $45 million per year.
