The Giants still need to resolve the uncertain futures of their two offensive cornerstones from this past playoff season, and Boomer thinks it will be resolved with Barkley hitting free agency, and Jones staying put, though not in the way Jones would likely prefer.
“I’m convinced it’s gonna be Daniel Jones who gets the tag,” Boomer said.
“They may come to an agreement with one or the other, but if I were both of them, I would hold steadfast and say ‘I’m not signing a deal,’ and get to free agency. One of them, if they don’t sign a contract extension, is going to hit free agency on March 15.”
Boomer believes that player hitting free agency will be Barkley, who reportedly didn’t come close to signing an extension when the two sides talked during Big Blue’s bye week this past season. The Giants have been vocal about their desire to keep Jones, who recently changed agents and could be seeking a massive pay bump after a career year. A franchise tag would negate that need, and potentially frustrate Jones, but that’s how Boomer sees things playing out, which could lead Barkley to sign with another team.
“It’s a hard one because he’s a great guy,” Boomer said. “Three out of his five years, he’s definitely lived up to the contract and all that stuff…but I think if I’m Saquon, I want to get to free agency, and hopefully I can extract the most amount of money as a running back. He knows what the Giants are offering him, and he’s already turned that down.”
