The Giants head into their home opener on Sunday with plenty of hype after last weekend’s thrilling win over the Titans on the road to begin what many expect to be a rebuilding season under first-year head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen.
Sunday’s win may have changed expectations for some, who can now sniff a 2-0 start with the struggling Panthers coming to town in Week 2, but Tiki Barber wants to cautiously remind fans that expectations shouldn’t change drastically after one game.
“Should the Giants win this game? Probably,” Tiki said during Friday’s Tiki and Tierney show. “At the same time, the Giants…are still in a rebuild phase. There are still deficiencies in some places. Who knows what’s gonna happen?
“I love that they’re winning, but I’m not focused on winning. To me, it’s about executing, building the right culture, it’s about setting themselves up to be good in the coming years.”
With the Dak Prescott-less Cowboys due up in Week 3 before the bears at home in Week 4, some Big Blue fans are dreaming about a fast start to the season behind a rejuvenated Saquon Barkley to thrust them into divisional contention, especially with Dallas down a starting quarterback for the next few weeks. But, as the team that shares a home stadium with them likes to use their “All Gas, No Brake” mantra, Tiki is urging fans to ease on the brake pedal when it comes to the hype level.
“They could get lucky because the NFC East is kind of up for grabs in a sense,” Tiki said. “There’s optimism, but you just have to be very cautious with it…they’re not there yet.”
