In what was supposed to be a statement reminder that the franchise was heading in the right direction, the Giants were instead flattened by the rival Cowboys in an embarrassing 40-0 loss at home to open the season on Sunday night.
All of the excitement surrounding year two of the new regime led by Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll was suffocated by the all-too familiar agony of being outclassed by Dallas, a team Big Blue has now lost to 12 out of the last 13 times.
The game got out of hand early and it never improved, and by the fourth quarter, it was completely out of reach as rain continued to pour down at MetLife Stadium, but Daboll continued to run out Daniel Jones to get continuously ambushed by a relentless Cowboys pass rush led by Micah Parsons, blowing through an outmatched New York offensive line whose anchor, Andrew Thomas, was hobbled since the early point of the first quarter.
When Thomas was eventually replaced, and Jones continued to be swarmed in the backfield, Giants fans seemed to turn on Daboll, last year’s Coach of the Year, for leaving in the team’s $40 million quarterback in a game that was completely out of reach, during a steady downpour, while the only entity more relentless than the precipitation was the pressure Jones was trying to escape after every snap.
Did it already mark the beginning of the end of the Daboll honeymoon era?
