Giants reportedly fire Brian Daboll as franchise faces another makeover

In a move that was becoming more expected by the week, the Giants have reportedly fired Brian Daboll.

After multiple late-game collapses and mounting losses, Big Blue has parted ways with Daboll after three-plus seasons, with the past two and a half mainly being a disaster. New York coughed up a 10-point lead to Chicago on Sunday, which appeared to be the last straw.

Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will be the interim head coach.

The Giants were 2-8 under Daboll this season, and winless in the four games in which they led by 10 or more on the road. The team has lost 22 of its last 27 games and has continued to watch their seasons die by the end of October following a promising first season under this new regime. But since that improbable playoff berth resulted in a Coach of the Year award for Daboll, the Giants are 11-33, and have started each of the last three seasons with a 2-7 record.

Daboll did finally help hit on a major need for Big Blue with the selection of Jaxson Dart, and many wondered if Dart’s emergence as a potential budding star would help save Daboll’s job. But even the allure of Daboll possibly replicating what he accomplished with Josh Allen as the Bills offensive coordinator could not mask the ineptitude of the rest of the team.

The Giants will now be on the lookout for their fifth head coach since Tom Coughlin departed 10 years ago (not counting the four games Steve Spagnuolo coached after Ben McAdoo was fired).

Daboll’s firing marks the second straight year that an in-season firing has happened in Gotham, with the Jets canning Robert Saleh midway through last season. Gang Green spiraled even further when Jeff Ulbrich took over for Saleh, before a new regime was put in place in the form of Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn.
