New Giants GM Joe Schoen hopes to retain assistant GM Kevin Abrams

Thomas McGaughey appears to be coming back as the Giants’ special teams coordinator, and it looks like Patrick Graham may be back as defensive coordinator, now that the Vikings are reportedly set to hire Kevin O’Connell as their head coach.

There appears to be a pair of holdovers sticking around in the front office too: according to GM Joe Schoen, he’s hopeful to retain cap guru Kevin Abrams as an assistant GM and Ed Triggs as director of football operations.

“Kevin's been really good. I've been here (a short time) and just going through the process of sending in consents for coaches, notifications, if we're moving on from people, just getting the feel for the building. He's been a tremendous resource for me,” Schoen said earlier this week. “Kevin's been an outstanding resource for me thus far and I will continue to lean on him. He and Ed do a really good job in their roles and I look forward to continuing working with both of those guys.”

Schoen and Abrams have had conversations about the latter’s official role, with the new GM saying the Abrams is willing to take on a newer role if it means adding another staffer to that assistant role.

“We've had conversations about that and Kevin's very humble and selfless. If for some reason we decide that we need that Assistant GM title to get somebody up, he's offered that up, but we haven't crossed that bridge,” Schoen said. “Again, I'm going to continue to assess everybody in the entire organization before I make any decisions on moving on or changing titles. But Kevin is very smart, he knows the league, he knows the rules, he knows the ins and outs. The biggest thing for me is while we're trying to find assistant coaches or I'm trying to find my scouting staff to know that the operations part is taken care of, and I can give Kevin something and he can run with it because he's done it. He's got contacts in the league, he's got agent relationships, so I've been very impressed with Kevin thus far.”

And, Abrams’ salary cap knowledge will come in handy as well, as Schoen has said that he hopes to clear $40 million off the Giants’ cap number to help the team prevent another situation like 2021, where they were playing short-handed and re-worked several contracts just to maintain under the cap.

“We’re going to get into that here shortly now that (Head Coach) Brian (Daboll) is in place, and talk to the support staff that was here,” Schoen said. “Brian talked about the type of players we're going to bring in the building, so we're going to evaluate them not only on the field but off the field. Again, there's going to be difficult decisions that we may have to make, but there are certain rules we have to follow, and we've got to be under the salary cap. We’ll get into all that once all the coaches are here; once we know what they want scheme-wise, then we’ll make those decisions.”
