Giants GM Joe Schoen 'would consider' signing Odell Beckham Jr. if and when he's healthy

Giants GM Joe Schoen had “no idea” Odell Beckham Jr. was at the Giants’ facility visiting Sterling Shepard last month, but Schoen wouldn’t rule out having OBJ in on an official visit at some point.

“Obviously he’s been a good player, and he’s a guy we would consider and talk to when he’s healthy, Schoen said in his post-trade deadline press conference Tuesday. “He tore his ACL in February, so we’re not sure where he’s at physically, but any player that would upgrade the roster, we’d consider them and have conversations with their representatives.”

When asked what he’d think of OBJ saying he’d like to come back to New York, Schoen doubled down.

“Does he? I don’t know – that’s a hypothetical,” Schoen smiled. “He’s a good player, from what I’ve evaluated, if he’s healthy. If a player’s healthy and could help us win football games, we will pursue them if they fit what we’re looking for.”

The Giants’ receiving corps has been besieged by injuries this year, and the team just dealt Kadarius Toney to the Chiefs last week, a move Schoen said “was the best decision for the organization.”

Big Blue was linked to possibly adding a different receiver at the trade deadline, with Houston’s Brandin Cooks the most linked name, but the Giants didn’t add any players, the GM saying “we had several conversations with teams on multiple positions, but the price point didn't match up."

OBJ was of course the Giants’ first-round pick in 2014 and spent five tumultuous seasons in New York before being traded to Cleveland before the 2019 season. He spent two-plus there before being released and signing with the Rams last November, where he helped L.A. win the Super Bowl but suffered his second torn ACL in 18 months in the second quarter of that game.

Entering the bye week, the Giants’ leading receivers in their three main categories are running back Saquon Barkley (28 catches), Darius Slayton (232 yards), and injured tight end Daniel Bellinger, whose two receiving touchdowns make him the only Giant with more than one.
