Joe Schoen joined Boomer and Gio at Giants training camp on Tuesday morning, and confessed that it was draining at times to be on camera so frequently over the offseason for Offseason Hard Knocks on HBO.
The show was widely praised, and Schoen noted that cameras followed him and other Giants personnel around the clock, even if it resulted in just minutes of content used on the final product. One of the biggest revelations to come out of the behind-the-scenes access was the Giants’ willingness to trade up and take a quarterback to potentially replace Daniel Jones, but Schoen says he and his quarterback are on good terms after those episodes aired.
“I don’t think so. There was no issue with trust,” Schoen said. “Daboll and I thought all along it was very important to be up front and to communicate and shoot these guys straight. They’re grown men. It’s a business.
“We let him know. We didn’t want him to be blindsided and wanted to be up front with him. I think when you’re up front and communicate and you’re honest, there’s no issue with trust.”
Another takeaway for many fans was the presence of co-owner John Mara, who voiced his heavy reluctance to letting Saquon Barkley go, especially if it resulted in the lifelong Giant signing with the hated Eagles. But Schoen says he welcomed the input from Mara, noting how long he has been around the organization and the success he has been a part of.
“To me, it’s an advantage to have him in the building every day,” Schoen said of Mara. “To have him here as a resource...those conversations and dialogue are great for me.
“He may question things, and that’s his right, he owns the team. But he’s always gonna support us.”
