Joe Schoen tells Evan and C-Mac why he gets nervous at Giants training camp

Giants general manager Joe Schoen joined Evan and C-Mac on Monday to talk about the anxiety that he feels during his first training camp as the team’s general manager.

Simply put, it comes down to Schoen clenching his teeth and trying to get through camp without any injuries.

“To me, it’s more the players,” Schoen said. “I want to be as healthy as we can Week 1. So when I come out to practice and we’re gonna run five more plays, I’m just praying we get through practice and nobody gets hurt. That’s the nervousness and the anxiousness that a personnel guy goes through this time of year.

“It’s really replacing the bodies and hope you don’t have any season-ending injuries.”

So, any nerves aren’t related to Schoen worrying about the team he assembled before his first season at the helm. It’s about that team remaining intact by the time Week 1 rolls around. But there will be a balance, and Schoen will have to face his fears for the good of his team getting acclimated with a new system.

“Every year that’s what we go through. How do we get them tough and used to hitting in pads, but also keep them fresh and healthy when you get to the regular season?” Schoen said. “As a new regime comes in, new offensive scheme and new defensive scheme, we have to see these guys play.”
