The Giants already knew they would have their hands full on Sunday as they open the 2018 season against a Jacksonville Jaguars team that came just a few minutes short of beating the Patriots and punching their ticket to the Super Bowl last January.

Now New York will have to beat Tom Coughlin's Jaguars without their most talented pass rusher.

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur announced Friday that linebacker Olivier Vernon has been ruled out of the Week 1 matchup with Jacksonville.

Vernon suffered a high-ankle sprain during practice late last month. Despite Shurmur holding out hope that Vernon would be able to make it back in time for the opener, calling the 27-year-old a "fast healer," the linebacker will be forced to watch from the sidelines.

Filling in for Vernon will be third-round pick Lorenzo Carter, who returned to practice Friday and appears ready to go, and veteran pass rusher Connor Barwin, who signed with the Giants in late July.
