The Giants’ brass held their end-of-season press conference on Monday, where GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll discussed the futures of Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones, other free agency thoughts, the Giants’ progression this season, and a lot more.
In that “a lot more” were a few one-off quotes and thoughts that didn’t have much more to say behind it, so here’s one last edition of Giants Quotebook for the season with a few notes from Schoen:
On Leonard Williams’ contract future: “We haven’t discussed that yet – but I liked his quote yesterday about the pay cut! He didn’t mention that in the exit interview yesterday.”
On the Giants’ rookie class: “I like the guys we brought in. There were some ups and downs, which you always have, and a lot of injuries - I think they all got injured at some point except for (Micah) McFadden. Kayvon Thibodeaux got healthy and hit his stride, Evan Neal the same deal, and Wan’Dale (Robinson) was really coming along and he’d have been a big-time contributor down the stretch. Cor’Dale Flott has a high ceiling…I don’t want to go through the whole list, but a lot of contributions. When these guys get healthy next year, some of those guys will compete for starting spots and be big contributors, and some other guys who will be good depth for us. Smart, young, and dependable.”
On if Dexter Lawrence has earned a potential extension: “I’d say he’s done enough. He played well. We got him under the fifth-year option, and that will be part of our end of season review. Great player, great person, great teammate. Glad he’s here.”
On the future of safety Julian Love: “We talked to him during the bye week, and he knows how we feel. We want him around. We had a good exit interview, we’ll talk to the coaches and we’ll see if we can get something done.”
On if Xavier McKinney’s ATV accident changed the perception of him: “Not for us. It was an unfortunate accident, a mistake the young man made. We all make mistakes and have to learn from it, and for us, it was less about football, and more about his rehab and well-being. He’s a great kid we look forward to working with.”
BONUS QUOTE - Brian Daboll on the fact that his coordinators are both getting head coaching interviews: “I have a lot of confidence in our staff, they’ve done a great job. When these interviews come up, and I’ve been a part of them the last few years, you always have to have a plan, because you never know what’s going to happen. The good thing about the second year is you have a lot of people in place who know how we do things. As I’m sitting there going through the calendar, we’ve done it before, so it will be a little smoother.”
