Thursday’s preseason opener gave Giants fans their first look at Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley back on the field together, as the duo prepare for critical seasons that could determine their future with the team.
But as he’s said before, Gio still doesn’t believe either one will be in New York much longer under the new regime.
“It really comes down to, are Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley real NFL players that you can count on past this year?” Gio said. “I’ve been saying ‘no’ for the last several years, and I still believe that. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but I don’t think we’re gonna be talking about those guys as long-term Giants after this year.”
Jones has battled injuries and seemingly endless new coaching staffs and offensive playbooks, while Barkley hasn’t looked like the Pro Bowler he was as a rookie since his ACL injury in 2020. There is some more optimism with Brian Daboll now at the helm, but Gio doesn’t think that changes their ultimate fate.
“I know their schedule is favorable, I understand they’ve got weapons, they had a great draft,” Gio said. “But Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll are going to make their name in this Giants organization with a different quarterback and without Saquon Barkley.”
