Saquon Barkley has been once of the most dynamic offensive playmakers in the NFL this season, and he further reinforced that label on Sunday when his return from a shoulder injury sparked the eventual game-winning drive.
Barkley was itching to get back in the game while trainers looked him over after what looked like a shoulder/upper-body injury after being tackled in the second half. He eventually got his wish, and wasted no time making his reintroduction known.
“He came back out, then he went in, and then he said he was good,” Brian Daboll said. “They looked at him, I kept asking him on the sideline if he was good to go, and he said he was good to go…He's a competitor, that's what I'll say about Saquon. He competes.”
Barkley put his trust in the training staff, but felt good to go as soon as he was cleared, and just wanted to make sure everybody knew it. his body language certainly showed his eagerness to snap his helmet back on and take the field.
“I wasn’t woozy at all. I wasn’t stumbling,” Barkley said. “I was pacing back and forth because I’m trying to get back in the game. There are protocols and things I gotta go through to get back in the game. We have some of, if not the best training staff and doctors, and I put my trust in them. Obviously I’ve spent a little bit more time with them over the last couple years, rehabbing more than I would like, but I know they have my best interests at heart…and they did everything to help me get back in the game and help the team win.”
Barkley’s return came at just the right time for the Giants, as he caught a pass out of the backfield and made a defender miss for a 40-yard gain, then punched in a 2-yard touchdown run out of the wildcat to put Big Blue ahead for good.
“There’s no doubt what he brings to our offense,” Daniel Jones said. “To have him back at that point of the game there was a little bit of a lift for us. That was big time.”
