Justin Fields has been traded to the Steelers for a conditional sixth-round pick, a seemingly light return for a 25-year-old quarterback who showed some flashes of promise with the Bears last season.
A caller asked Gio and Jerry why the Giants wouldn’t have been in on such a move, and neither had a counter argument, as they both believed it would have been a good pickup for Big Blue.
“Let’s say they traded for Justin Fields,” Gio said. “You have Daniel Jones and Justin Fields as your two quarterbacks, make it a competition going into the year, and you use that first pick on one of the top receivers.
“It might be a situation where Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll just don’t like the player…I don’t know their thought process right now, but there would be so much more excitement going into the season if that had happened. You got something there.”
Jerry would have liked to have seen that scenario play out instead of the Giants drafting a J.J. McCarthy at sixth overall, which would take Big Blue out of the running for one of the top receiving weapons in the draft, something the offense needs after top playmaker Saquon Barkley signed with the Eagles.
“It’s a better team,” Jerry said.
