Gio: Would Giants really give up big assets for a Drake Maye or JJ McCarthy?
As the NFL Draft approaches, Gio can’t help but have concern over how drastically the stock of certain quarterbacks have risen since the end of the college football season, especially as he hears reports that teams like the Giants could be looking to move up to take a Drake Maye or JJ McCarthy.
“That scares me,” Gio said. “I know interviews and combines and Pro Days can change things. But up until that point after the season…NFL GMs and people evaluating the draft didn’t see him as a savior at the quarterback position. What happens is, GMs are like ‘damn, the guy I really want, I’m not gonna be able to get.’”
McCarthy was barely seen as a first-round pick at the start of the offseason, and now could be seen going to the Giants at sixth overall, or even higher in the draft. Maye was always the higher-touted prospect, but even he initially wasn’t seen as a top-five pick, but now, it seems like a sure thing. That kind of change without any new on-field tape scares Gio, especially given the recent history of New York teams whiffing on quarterbacks in the draft.
“We’re talking about if it’s Drake Maye or JJ McCarthy,” Gio said. “Are you forgoing your next couple of drafts for one of those two guys, or is that just an overrated because you’re in desperate need of a younger guy?”
