Saquon Barkley and the Giants were not able to come to an agreement on a new deal before Monday’s deadline, and Gio believes Barkley should have taken Big Blue’s offer, even if it was slightly more than what the franchise tag will pay him.
“I still would have signed the deal if I were him…it would have been guaranteed money,” Gio said. “I guess the way he and his agent are thinking about it, if he plays on the franchise tag for the next two years in a row, it would have been more money guaranteed than what the Giants were offering, but this is a guy who has a history of injuries and has missed a lot of time.”
Barkley wanted more guaranteed money, and he will now likely sit out training camp. But Gio says it would have been wise to take the safer route.
"I would not have rolled the dice," Gio said. "I would have signed the deal reluctantly and made sure I had that money just in case something happens this year…but it sucks. The whole thing sucks."
