Giants head coach Joe Judge did not hide where he was placing blame for New York’s ugly loss to the Buccaneers on Monday night.
Judge was putting it directly on the shoulders of himself and the coaching staff.
“Yeah, you can put that down tonight,” Judge said when asked if he was attributing this loss to coaching more than the players’ execution. “You guys can write that tonight...I’m not going to debate that.”
New York was at its closest to full strength in nearly a month, with Saquon Barkley and Andrew Thomas both back from lengthy absences, but the offense once again looked anemic at best, logging just 215 total yards. But Judge wasn’t looking at the players on the field when giving his first impressions of what went wrong.
“We gotta do a better job of putting our players in position to make plays,” Judge said after Monday’s 30-10 defeat. “We have too many good players. We gotta put them in a better position to capitalize on it. That’s it.
“Generally speaking, we have to do everything better. We didn’t do anything really well enough to win the game tonight…we have to make sure we put our players in a better position through coaching, and we have to execute when we have the opportunity to make plays.”
Of course, initial thoughts would turn towards offensive coordinator Jason Garrett after another poor offensive showing, and Judge was decidedly less definitive when asked about Garrett’s job security after the game. He declined to go any further into speaking on Garrett specifically, but he didn’t hold back on blaming the coaching staff as a whole, and didn’t seem to blame players for expressing any frustration on the field on Monday night.
“In reference to any kind of body language or anything at the end of the game, I’ll handle the corrections we gotta make,” Judge said. “But as a player, there’s some things I’d be frustrated with too as well.”
Judge declined to elaborate on what he thought players should be frustrated with, but he certainly seemed to be implying that it was related to the performance from the coaching staff.
“I’m gonna keep that between the team right there,” Judge said.
With a shorter week to prepare before taking on the Eagles on Sunday, Judge and his underperforming staff will have to figure things out in a hurry before New York slides deeper into what appears to be another lost season.
“We gotta make sure we sit down tomorrow as a coaching staff and understand how we’ve got to play this game and give our players a chance to make plays,” Judge said. “We’re not gonna turn the page on this as coaches until corrections are made.”
